  1. I would suggest taking complete measurments of each room, making sure you have really good measurments of all doorways and windows( how long, wide, and wall space left top and bottom),that way you can  get some idea of what you would like the rooms to look like when finished. Then go to a store, such as Lowes or Home Depot, where they have computerized room layouts.  Put the dimentions in the computer and then you have a bird's eye view of your house. Next, play around with the dimintions of differnt sized furniture and appliances to see how it would fit/look in each room and "paint" the walls in whatever shades you would like.  This should give you the basic idea of how each room will look when your projects are finished.  I would suggest you start your remodeling one room at the time; when that one is finished, go on to the next room. OH,,, think about "refinishing" your cabinets in your kitchen instead of tearing them out and buying new ones, also different countertop finshes would be cheaper than tearing out and starting over.  You will be amazed what just this econical make over will save (on your wallet and wear and tear on nerves and you might have enough money left over to upgrade your refdg, stove, dishwasher, etc,)  Good luck........ 2. This is a pretty vast question - You need to hire a contractor & interior decorator.  The decorator can seem expensive, but if you need help making decisions or doing the research, they can be a big time saver.  If you're on a tight budget, look for someone that maybe just started their business or just got out of school.  Take a look at some pictures they might have for reference, even if it's their own home or friends & family.  They may be eager to get a portfolio going & give you a good price.

I may be biased, but stay away from the big box stores.  There are a lot of say, plumbing supply houses that now have showrooms & have expanded to included cabinetry, flooring, lighting, etc.  A contractor usually has resources for these areas.  Buy a bunch of home & remodeling magazines & clip pictures of things you like - you don't have to look a whole room, you may just like they way they laid the pattern for the tile on a floor, or en exposed beam in a living room ceiling.  Put them together in a binder & I bet you'll start to see that you gravitate toward one direction more than another.  It'll help your contractor & designer too.

I gave another poster tips on choosing a contractor in this post: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

    Good luck!
