We Willy wins A8 race in top form at Sunderland
In life, there are often times where things can go perfectly without a hitch, but there are other times when the exact opposite happens. This concept is nothing new to 450m greyhound racing, where all
of the racers alternate between good and bad days on a regular basis.
Today was a good day for We Willy (6-1) at Tetley’s Sunderland Stadium in Sunderland. He turned in a great performance in the first A8 race of the day. Coming out of trap three, We Willy led first, and
sprinted to a great 28.76 second finish. A distance of 3 lengths separated him from second-place finisher Dingo Star (7-4).
Dingo Star ran on to finish the race in 29.00. Windgap Shauna, the 10-1 longshot, closed the gap on third place with a 29.06 finish. She was ¾ lengths away from a second-place finish.
Pre-race favourite Peggys Prospect, the 6-4 favourite, had disappointing result on the track today. Despite a clear run, she finished in fourth place with a time of 29.18, which put her 1½ lengths out
of the top three. Since making her debut on 19 March 2009, Peggys Prospect has made trap one her home. Her record at Sunderland has been full of highs and lows, but she does have 12 first-place finishes to her credit.
Nowisthetime, another 10-1 long shot, picked a bad time for a fifth-place finish. He completed the race in 29.24, which was ¾ lengths behind the favourite. The sixth and final position went to Affirmation
(5-1), who affirmed a loss in this race with a 29.64 finishing time. This placed him 5 lengths out of fifth place.
Zigzag Pearl (4-1) picked up a close victory in the A7 race that followed. She crowded third, but led the run in to finish the race in 28.96. A single length behind her was Swift Juggle (3-1), who led
second en route to a 29.04 finish. The gap between second and third place was only a ½ length, with Autumn Emperor (8-1) taking third place in 29.08 despite some earlier bumping and crowding.
Lisnahavil King (5-2) took home a fourth-place finish in 29.16, which was one length away from the third position. Crowding at first led Central Place (5-1) to a 29.34 finish, which landed him in fifth
place. He was 2¼ lengths behind Lisnahavil King. Murlough Mini, the pre-race favourite at 9-4 odds, was the last-place finisher in this race. She was a neck’s length behind fifth place in 29.36, and disappointed many racing fans with this result.
Will We Willy emerge victorious again? Can Murlough Mini bounce back from her loss? Find on Wednesday 15 September when Tetley’s Sunderland Stadium plays host to a big 14-race card. The racing begins with
an A8 race at 14:18.
