  1. We don't all know they have become a con.

I don't doubt that some are placed deliberately to maximise revenue, but many others do make roads safer.

I travel to work on a 50 mph single carriageway road, which was a known blackspot, on two short straights which tempted the overtakers.

Two clearly marked speed cameras on these straights have made overtaking well-nigh impossible, and made the road much safer.

Road deaths in UK have fallen to 3,000 per year - the lowest for 40 years. Obviously not due to speed cameras, but they are one tiny contributor, when placed appropriately.

You can avoid coming to the attention of speed cameras, by sticking to speed limits, you know! And would you believe that most people have no points on their licence?

  2. I think that "safety" cameras should only work on a timed basis. They should be be on at peak times and school hours. They should be off at night. How is it dangerous to travel at 40 in a 30 zone at 3am on an empty road? I agree with you, they do only act as cash cow for the government.

The government realise that these cameras bring in more money than traffic police and have replaced officers with cameras.

  3. No.  If you don't want points and a fine, don't speed.  Not a difficult concept, surely?

  4. They are a tax con and a very deceitful one at that they are sited at "black spots" is  a bad joke when you see what the authorities use as their justification. i do not think the points system should be reviewed not from any concern about the fairness of the present system but in the knowledge that this bunch of thieving lying  b******s will make it even more unfair

  5. no, no way as long as money can be made from it

  6. The point system allows the court to determine if you're a consistent offender without reviewing your entire driving history.  It doesn't change anything but the time it would take the judge to determine what to do with you.  (If you don't violate the law more than once every few years, the point system doesn't affect you - if you do, you should change your driving habits.  There's no legitimate excuse for constantly being convicted of illegal driving.)

  7. you wont think its a joke when you get 12 and lose licence.....Chris if you dont get points for 34 then everyone will do 34 you have draw the line somewhere you will just want more what ever the cutoff point

  8. They are not a con, how many people have you scraped up off the road after they have been wiped out by a speeder?

They are also not a money generating scheme, the money generates enough to pay for the equipment and pay the wages with a bit left over, if you don't believe me then ask your local police for the figures under the freedom of information act.

It is well known, except by you, that speed kills, slow down and you don't kill.

Instead of saying the points system is a joke why don't you post your alternative to it?

Where I work we have a website telling you the roads that the cameras are on and all of them are notorious for having collisions.

Would you still have the same opinion if a loved one was killed by a speeder?

Its not hard if you dont want to give the government money then SLOW DOWN

  9. I don't understand the "con" about safety cameras.  You either run a red or you don't.  You don't have to worry about points if you slow down and obey traffic rules.

  10. Becoming i think not they have been a con from the very start , like practically all this governments tax dodges

  11. You all know the rules.  What are you winging about?!  You're trying to justify driving dangerously by making out the government are greedy and they just want our money.  What do you think this cash is spent on?  Making our roads safer for our children is what!

If you don't want points on your licence, don't break the speed limit.  Especially as you pass a speed camera.  They're bright yellow!!  If you couldn't see it, you should be paying more attention.

What would you prefer?  To pay a police officer £30 k a year to stand on the corner pointing a speed gun at you.  Or an electronic standalone camera that pays for itself.  I agree that camera are a form of tax.  GOOD!!  Careless drivers should be taxed more!  I don't care if they're short of cash this month, they shouldn't be speeding!

  12. There are no points when you run a red light camera, not sure about speed cameras, why?, because they are illegal, where is the complaining witness?

Get yourself a phantom plate cover, which has metal flakes that distort the flash, if they want to tax you, protect yourself.

Whats gonna happen when you are approaching a red light, and a tractor trailer is right on your bumper, you gonna slam on your brakes because of the camera?

  13. What the h**l are all you guys talking about?

  14. Yes, its so easy to get points through normal safe driving, there should be no points for someone doing 34 mph in a 30 zone. I don't think points should be removed altogether, anyone going over 50% faster than the limit (45 in a 30 zone) should still get points as they are obviously a danger.
