I will be adopting this beautiful boy (Trek) this week - he has recently been rescued and subsequently cared for by a wonderful lady in Broken Hill - we are not sure of his past but he is EXTREMELY timid with strangers, so timid in fact that it takes him days to come out of hiding when he is confronted with strangers - once he gets to know you however, he is extremely affectionate and just soaks up any attention you offer.

He doesn't seem to know much about being a dog though - he gets along fine with other dogs but is quite subservient, and it would seem he has never seen a toy in his life (we believe he's about 2yo) - he has picked up a few things by copying the other dogs he has been with though, so he's quite a bright chappy.

We will obviously be working on bringing him out of his shell, but it would be great to have more of an idea of his breeding to be able to gauge what his natural instincts would likely be.

What do you reckon he is a mixture of? Someone suggested his colouring is Beagle but I really don't know. Also, he is from outback Australia, so part Dingo isn't out of the question either. Thanks all

  1. go see the Dog Whisperer . . . he is a genius!

  2. Beagle and Shiba, or Beagle Dingo perhaps!  It's a very interesting mix!  He's beautiful!

    Thanks for adopting :)

  3. aww! He is ADORABLE!

His coloring does look a lot like a beagle, but his face and ears looks like a German Shepard's to me.

He is so cute and will hopefully warm up to you quickly, but it is important to give him a cage or "crate" is a nicer word, with the door ALWAYS open for his little hideaway, but never enter his "zone" it's wear he'll feel safest, or at least my dog feels best in his little zone, (ALWAYS cushion the bottom of it)

    He is so adorable!♥♥♥

  4. He may have some Shiba Inu in him. His eyes look so sad. Good for you for giving him a home. Take good care of him.♥♥

  5. Beagle Dingo mix.

  6. Probably A mix or some of all of these breeds: Shiba Inu, Basenji, Beagle, Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler, maybe even part Dingo

  7. beaglingo

  8. possibly a stretch here, but how about shiba inu / cattle dog??

  9. To be honest the best way to deal with a dog like this is before you bring him in the house, take him for a walk. Its best not to talk to him, or make eye contact with him. That can make him more nervous and timid. Just let him walk, do his thing and then take him to the house. Once inside, again, just let him go, don't talk, don't make eye contact. Just go about your business, let him come to you, and if he does, don't do anything, let him sniff you, let him become a dog. They have to learn, smell, sight then sound. Take him as many places as you can, and let people know that come over, to not speak to him, not to make eye contact with him. Once he gets used to this, he will come out of his shell and realize no one is a harm, and its ok to say hi. Hes just shy, and shy people don't like to be recognized right away, so think of it that way. God bless you for taking this wonderful pup in, and good luck.
