We are changing an electric dryer over from 3 prong cord to a 4 prong cord.?

There are 4 wires and we hooked it up like we were told and it blows the breaker every time we plug it in. Any idea's what would be hooked up wrong?

  1. STOP!  An electric dryer is not the appliance to learn about electricity with.  They draw some serious current and the circuit protect has to be huge as well!  This means that you can expose yourself to some serious voltage and amperage before your breaker will trip!  Hire a professional before someone gets hurt.


  2. USA   If it trips the breaker every time you plug it in, there is a direct ground fault (also called short circuit).  Either at the dryer or the receptacle there is a black or red wire - these are the current carrying "hot" wires - contacting a white or green (or bare) wire.  Make sure the connections from the dryer and at the receptacle follow through with the same color all the way, and are black to black, red to red, white to white, green to green.  Check out the website Tule listed.
