  1. Two weeks is ample time to see Tasmania - the south island of Australia.

If you are travelling to New Zealand, which also has a South Island, I suggest New Zealand dollars as the currency of choice.

  2. The south island is New Zealand not Australia. You need NZ dollars not Australian for starters, I would get a thousand before you leave your home country.

I would prebook accomodation at Christchurch and Queenstown if you're going to be there during the snow season. Elsewhere isn't necessary. A nice road trip is Christchurch - Akaroa - Timaru- Dunedin - Invercargill - Queenstown. I would stay two nights in Dunedin, and at least two in Christchurch and Queenstown. Akaroa is a day trip from Christchurch so you would be looking at a night in Christchurch for that trip.

Try the Christchurch gondola for lovely scenery, you can do it on a tour that includes a visit to a widlife reserve with a haka and cultural experience.

On the drive from Christchurch to Timaru you can see beautiful snowcapped mountains.

From Dunedin theres a train that does a trip around, can't remember the name but its an old steam train.

In Queenstown you have to go on the gondola and have a meal at the restaurant, beautiful views and good food.

Milford sound may be worth a visit for you, personally I hated the 3 hour travel just to see a lake that I didn't find all that grand, but many people love it.

My parents went in October and Queenstown was still rather pricey, so I would be booking ASAP. They stayed at the Novotel Gardens. My mum has horrible arthritis and needs a knee replacement and she managed on the trip, you can do as much or as little walking as you like.

  3. With regards to easy to find accommodation - you can try http://www.hotels2go.com.au/usersignup.p... You'll need to sign  up to see what is available, but there is loads of good deals, some even giving you free meals with your accommodation, or discounted tour/sight seeing tickets. Just by signing up, you could win a free holiday to Bali! Check it out, and goodluck with your travels!

  4. I guess you are going to the South Island of New Zealand . Don't change your money at the airport they give you a worse rate than the banks. The Banks will charge you approx $8 so change most of it at once. If you don't want to much cash hanging around you can also get a travel card or travellers cheques Talk to the bank. The exchange rate is good at the moment for aussies travelling overseas. It's always good to have your first night booked so you can go straight from the plane to your room. Need more details really to give other suggestions like are you travelling through the South Island . There are some fabulous places to see but I'm not sure where you will be. Have a great holiday. ps you can change australian dollars at the banks in NZ and I don't think they charge. They like getting Australian dollars but you will need som NZ dollars to arrive with.
