With almost 18 new recruits joining the Lions, the quality of the squad improved vastly. Fittingly enough, they have been labelled as genuine title contenders this term.
Although they struggled to get their rhythm together in the opening fixtures, their last few matches have seen nothing but victory. Domingos Paciência’s men have won six games in a row and are now slowly but surely rising up the table.
Currently placed 5th in the Liga Sagres standings, they will be looking to further challenge their rivals and secure the league this time.
One player who truly believes that his side are up there with the best of the best is former Liverpool defender, Emiliano Insua, who claims that the club will pose a stern test for the likes of FC Porto and Benfica this time around.
"We are playing well, winning games and gaining confidence. We have had six consecutive victories and are back into the fight for the title with Benfica and FC Porto.” He beamed.
Insua also commented on the game against Vitoria Guimarães and said that although they were unlucky with Rinaudo’s sending off, the team performed admirably with ten men on the pitch.
"It was very important to win in Guimaraes, but it was not easy. We had to come back to finish with ten players on the field. We had a bit of bad luck with the expulsion and we were very tired, but showed team unity and won. We are on the right track,” Insua
was quoted as saying.
Sporting Lisbon’s next game will be against Vaslui in the UEFA Europa League but the tie takes place after the International break on October 20, 2011.
