  1. Call the vacation, watersports, tours and fun experts actually in Cancun at 1-888-862-3806 they are the best. www.cancuncatamarans.com

  2. If you are heading south, you might want to check out this ad I recently saw, your resort stay in Cancun could be free.  Http://www.tinyurl.com/5alzt7

  3. Use the local bus system. It's cheap, fast, safe and no need for driving directions. The buses run late and start very early in the morning. There are usually bus stops in front of most hotels on the hotel zone. It costs under a dollar to ride. Taxis are also cheap, but more than a bus. If you take a taxi, ask how much to your location before you get in. You can also ask at the hotel for a price range to a certain location so you can compare it to the quote the taxi driver gives you.

The bus system will take you to all the tourist sites in cancun and along the mayan riveria (playa de carmen, tulum, Xel-Ha...) I would only recommend renting a car if you are going to make a trip to Chichenitza. There are excursions that can booked from the hotel. They leave early, provide meals and return late that evening. Excursions like that let you relax instead of drive, however, you will be in a group and the time at Chichenitza is short. I recommend renting a car for that. If possible, stay for the light show at night. You might even want to stay overnight at a hotel there. Chichenitza is an all day thing.

If you rent a car, just use your commen sense. Don't speed, don't drive ctoo crazy. We stay for months at a time in the area and we have never had police target us. The drivers there are more aggresssive. Even though we have a vehicle there, we usually always take the bus to save on gas and money.

    Have fun!

  4. Renting a car give you flexibility to go when you want and leave when you want.  All my trips to Mexico have bee fly in and rent a car.  As you can see in the map in the link below, there are many Maya ruins that most people don't get to see and they're the ones I like to get to.

  6. There isn't much actually near Cancun that isn't easier to get to by bus or other local transportation.  If you want to see ruins on your own, and visit the towns south of Cancun, like Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen or Tulum, then you may want to rent a car, as these places are in the range of 45 min to a couple hours away.  However, if your only desire is to see the major attractions, like Chichen Itza, you'll probably be better off and more comfortable taking an organized tour.  Driving can be a little hazardous down here, and parking is sometimes difficult.  Rental cars can also be targets for lining the pockets of the policia.  Tours get you where you need to be safely and efficiently, though they, of course, preclude any interesting side trips.  It just depends on how adventurous you personally want to be.

  7. I would discourage it mainly because of the insane habits

It took a year of bus and taxis before I felt stupid enough to join the pack. I still have at least one close call a week.Mainly in downtown Acapulco.

Rural area I do alright.......And like the other person stated parking and targeted by the police.
