Question:

We are going to look at a 96 Lincoln Mark VIII tomorrow and I have a question!?

The seller said it needs a driver side air strut replacement, and from what I can tell this is not available anywhere. I looked on AutoZone and Murray's websites and had no luck!

I am wondering how much does this cost and what replacement part can we buy to fix this?

Can we get a regular spring strut?

I don't want to get ripped off, the car is only $2000 and I don't want to have to pay something crazy to replace this!

  1. For what it's worth, I found two sites that claim to have the answer to your problem.

    www. Lincoln-Airstruts.com

    www.struts-r-us.com

  2. A Mark VIII was an expensive car when new and it's parts reflect that. The air suspension can get finicky with age and if the driver's side strut is going, the passenger's side isn't probably far behind. Best bet would be to source a guaranteed used air-strut from a reputable salvage parts  vendor. Maybe there's a retro-fit standard style strut for the big Linc, visit some Lincoln Mark VIII specific owners website, I'm sure they can answer your question much better.

  3. There are a couple of aftermarket suppliers for lincoln air springs, and they're only $182 right here:

There is another supplier, I think, but that'll get you started.  Google "lincoln air spring" or "air strut" and see what you find.  Great car.

Mark 8's can be re-sprung wtih steel, if you prefer the low-maintenance approach. It's cheap.  Same page.

P.S. Kind of surprised at the bad answers..... Tell you what - go to a Mark VIII forum instead, you'll get better quality answers.  I recommend lincolnsonline.com

  4. My uncle had this car, those struts were a constant problem.

wish I could help more, but I recommend you find out FOR SURE before you buy

  5. I assume since you  say it needs a strut that you need the front one since the back has a seperate air spring and shock.  The strut for the left front is PN-F6LY 3C098 B and lists for $566.27.  Trying to convert the car to regular struts will leave you with an undependable cobbled together mess when you are done, as far as durablity of the factory air suspension goes, as long as it hasn't had a lot of use on gravel roads they stand up quite well but you still need to consider this car is 12 years old and it is going to need work.
