  1. The first answer is right about Geneva verses Lausanne and has good suggestions.  Since you are already staying in large cities for 4 days consider staying in a mountain village instead of Lausanne. Most of the famous ski resorts are great in the summer, and a less known example is Leysin:   http://www.leysin.ch/indexe.html

  2. I agree that your experience in Lausanne will be truer "Swiss" than Geneva which has more and more foreign companies and people living there.  The prices are also high given this international flair.  Gruyere is a beautiful castle and there is another delicacy besides the cheese.  It's a thick heavy cream that you eat with blueberries.  It's a little slice of heaven but heavy on the tummy.  Another fun thing to do is to rent a small boat on the lake and do a little tour.  Bring a picnic and eat by the lakeshore.  Switzerland really is a gem of a country.  I hope you enjoy it.

  3. I'd rather go to Lausanne because lovely sight-seeing places like Montreux,Chateau-de-Chillon,small vine producing villages etc. are nearby. Also the charming village of Gruyere is not too far-a-way (world famous for it's cheese and the Gyger museum (he made the Star Wars figures for the movie). Lausanne is also more intimate/friendlier than Geneva.
