we have taken down our walls and now we don't know how to remove the drain to take out the shower base. How do you tell if you'll need a special tool and if you do what kind of tool is it?

  1. Usually there is a flat nut that screws down in the middle of the drain.  A spanner wrench is made for this but it can be removed with a hammer and screwdriver  by tapping it in a counterclockwise direction using the notches in the nut.

  2. It either screws in or prys up with a small prybar or large s***w driver. Try and spin it around first. If that doesn't work, pry it up.

  3. Hi Anna,

Try out this link for a tool that will allow you to remove that drain with the shower insert as a whole so that you can replace for the new insert or tile.

If you are going the tile route, visit this link for a very helpful forum of pros to walk you through your project.

  4. Take a pair of channel lock pliers and stick the handles in the drain holes and get a hold of them with another wrench(cresent) and turn like h*** it should break free...if not hook up your sawsall and cut a hole in the floor and reach in and cut the drain off............have fun........nite.
