  1. Among the most popular  for this purpose are the species and varieties of New Zealand flax (phormium) with spikey leaves of different colours: green,blue/green, with variegated hostas, reddish bergenia, bears breeches(acanthus) which are large, green and deeply toothed. Purple tellima:  peltiphylum with its large parasol like leaves, thyme green, or grey. Purple forms of bugle  ( ajuga reptans). Stone crops (sedum)and house leeks (sempervivum) which have various shades of reds green and yellows. I could go on all day but in the end it's your garden.

  2. Try echeveria or desert rose. It is hardy and very attractive en masse.

  3. Monkey Grass.it is green. and holds every thing in place

  4. For a plant that has something to show all year have a look at Garrya elliptica ( silk tassel bush). Its an evergreen with dark green leaves with a gray woolie underside. During the winter it has beautiful long tassel's.

  5. I think it is most interesting to watch the development of a sedum plant.  they come up in the spring, change throughout the summer as they bush up, and come into bloom in autumn.  I have successfully had "Autumn Joy" in recent years, but this year I planted a few "Purple Emperor" and am delighted!  What an interesting addition to my perennial border!  It changes weekly.
