We are living in the ‘Golden Age’ of Tennis – Tennis Special
Growing up in 1980’s, I believed that the best tennis is already at my disposal with the likes of the Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl thumping away their opponents like a piece of cake and winning titles at their will.
The above stated players were touching the number one spot time and again and volleying their opponents out of their throne whenever they wanted. The three superstars racked up titles more than anyone in the Open Era of tennis
with Connors winning the record 109 titles in his professional career. It is probably a record that is going to live on forever because winning that many titles in a single professional career with so much competition beside you is not going to be easy at
all.
It was probably the ‘Golden Age’ in my opinion but I never knew that I will grow up to something that will be more stupendous and monumental than the show I saw in my childhood. However, I was terribly wrong with my thinking because
what I see now is something special, incredible and interesting. The ‘Golden Age’ is not the one that I grew up to but the current world of tennis featuring the likes of the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer, the King of Clay Rafael Nadal and the rock hard warrior
Novak Djokovic.
All these three superstars have re-written a history of tennis in a new fashion. The triumph of the legendary tennis ace, Federer, in the final showdown of the Wimbledon Championships registered the 29th straight Grand
Slam title shared by the three stated players from the last 30 played. The level of play at the courts is extremely entertaining with some mind-blowing tennis rallies at our disposal.
One of the recent examples of something superhuman from the two of the three players is the final of the Australian Open that lasted a record time period of almost six hours and ended deep in five sets with Nadal and Djokovic barely
managing to stand at the time of the presentation ceremony. The triangular rivalry is a treat to watch and I have never seen something like this ever in my life.
Another example from the crazy game play of Nadal and Federer can be snapped from the five hour Wimbledon Championships final in 2008 when the Spanish superhuman ended the five straight Wimbledon final winning streak of the Swiss
Maestro at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Federer is 30-year-old but still standing firm at the top spot in the world rankings. Djokovic who lost the number one rank to the Swiss Maestro the Wimbledon Championships is trying hard to reclaim his throne. On the other hand,
Nadal is fresh to commence the US Open campaign. He didn’t participate in the London Olympics due to an injury so he is a major threat to the title defence of Djokovic at the US Open. There you see, the rivalry is tough that deciding between the three is becoming
increasingly difficult.
This is definitely the ‘Golden Age’ of Tennis.
