  1. Sponsorship is very difficult to obtain, to be allowed to sponsor an employee, Oz employers need to demonstrate to the immigration department they can not find a suitable Aussie to do the job - this is difficult and time-consuming.

The best way is to apply as a skilled immigrant if possible.

  2. A couple of important questions:

Has your partner worked as a painter and decorator for at least 1 of the last 4 years?

Considering that he got out of being a p&d, is he happy to work as one again for the next 2 or more years?

The best advice for you will depend on the answers to these questions as sponsorship may not be the best way to go.

  3. Have a look at this site - they've got info on working in Australia and New Zealand

  4. This is a list of positions in demand and also employer info

    http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-s...

  5. He may need to have his skills assessed by the relevant National Assessment Authority.

The latest Migration Occupations in Demand List does show Painter & Decorator.

Some examples of Licensing requirements for Painter & Decorators in the Different States here:

New South Wales -  Licensing is compulsory for unsupervised residential trade work. Licensing is not required for commercial or residential trade work.

Victoria -  There is no legal requirement for licensing or registration for this occupation in Victoria.

Queensland -  Licensing is compulsory in order to carry out or supervise building work over the value of $1100 (including Labour and materials).

One company that quotes: "A specialist recruitment consultancy firm with a dedicated focus on offshore recruitment" is
