  1. german shepherds are great with families. they will protect the kids and are just so sweet and smart. they love to cuddle and will scare off intruders by their vicious bark but they are just lap dogs at heart.

do not get poodles or little ankle biting dogs they are the most notoirous biters and little dogs get jealous and will attack the kids they suck!

i personally dont like pits i would never trust them around children

  2. Pugs or Puggles are good.....There is a puppy shop called Urban Tails in Peekskill Ny i dont know the exact address oh yeah and the owner can order any dog you want.i got my puggle from there and she is soo good.if you wanna talk more about it email me

  3. pugs are great family dogs, shih-tzu are great family dogs 2 i have a shih-tzu and he is really great, sometimes protective to the family, but when he's used to that person my dog just plays with them. i really recommend those 2.

  4. Lab, german shepard, cocker spaniel, shih tzu, minature poodle

  5. Well our family has a Maltese a maltipoo and a  yellow lab.

So they are all great dogs pick one that you like though!

  6. PUG!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are so cute, and have the biggest personalities, yet still small, make sure you have time to pay attention to them too!!!!

  7. It really depends on the type of dog that would be compatible with your family. You need to decide how much time you have to exercise and groom the dog. You also need to think about the size of the dog you want. Any dog has the capability of turning on you if they are not trained properly or mistreated.

  8. the absolute perfect family dog is a rough collie. i had one and she was the most adorable dog ever. they are really well tempered even when my little brother used to jump on her she would just sit there and sometimes l**k his face. crazy dog. but she was really sweet. i would always always recommend you get a rough collie as a family dog. but they do need alot of walking.

  9. I found this website and it helped us find our family dog, : http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

  10. And pitbulls do NOT turn on you.It depends on the owner. If the owner is responsible and has the dog trained and socialized, it's very highly unlikely that the Pit will turn on anyone.

However, if a Pit is owned by an irresponsible person who doesn't train or socialize the dog, and doesn't spend time with the dog, that Pit is likely to be vicious.

The problem is not the dog, but on the other end of the leash

Golden retriever. The golden retreiver is an excellent choice

for families that enjoy lots of outdoor activities. Though originally developed to help hunt birds, the golden rapidly proved himself as a loyal and devoted family member.

Pembroke Welsh corgi. At about 25 pounds, the Pembroke Welsh corgi is a popular pet. This stocky short tailed breed needs daily exercise and loves romping with the kids. They are best with older kids (over 6 or 7 years) as some dogs can be bossy and possessive.

West Highland white terrier. This small white terrier is playful and loveable but does require some exercise to keep him happy. The Westie is a good watch dog and faithful friend that needs some grooming to keep his coat mat and tangle free. The Westie can be an excellent dog for older children. They tend not to be tolerant of children's accidental mistreatments. They are often not recommended for households with children under the age of ten.

Irish setter. This beautiful red dog was originally developed to help with hunting but early on, the breed showed his natural aptitude as a companion. Loved by many and always eager to please, the Irish setter is a part of many families.

Schnauzer. The schnauzer is a wonderful family pet. Eager to please and to keep the family safe, this breed usually requires regular grooming and daily exercise. This breed thrives on human companionship and is available in three different sizes.

  11. boston terrier

    labs

    dashaund

    beagle

ive had all these types of dogs and they along good with kids and others.

  12. NOT a Chihuahua, they are cute and small and attract kids like magnets, but they just have something in them that doesn't get along with children. I have a Chihuahua and I would recommend one to anyone -- anyone without children.

Just a suggestion on what NOT to get. LOL

    xoxox

  13. golden retrievers, labs, and a lot of xlarge breed dogs (like st bernards) are great.

pit bulls won't attack, if not fought or exposed to violence, and they aren't as aggressive as people think, and can be great family dogs, but i know what you mean.

make sure (if you get a puppy) to go with a responsible breeder, not a puppy mill.  i also strongly suggest adopting from a shelter, petfinder.com is great!

  14. Any dog can have behavior problems.  As a dog owner you must be willing to put in the time and effort to have a good dog.  I suggest watching a few shows like The Dog Whisperer, It's Me or The Dog, and Barking Mad.  It will help you get an idea of what it takes to own a dog.  As for a good dog for your family, it depends on what your family is like.  If you are very active verses in active a good match will be different.  I would start by going to dog shows and talking to breeders.  There are many rescue organizations that can help you as well.  Remember owning a dog is like getting another kid, it requires a lot of work to get a good result.

  15. I'd recommend a Cocker Spaniel. They very friendly dogs and devoted to their owners. They're also very playful and are great with children.

Pros: They're great even with people with allergies; they won't grow to large; quite intelligent; fast learners.

Cons: Tend to a urine a little when they're excited; they have mighty appetites, but what dog doesn't?

I'd also recommend a Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever.

  16. Pit bulls are great dogs. They are friendly if raised right just like any other dog. Any dog will be mean if it is abused and neglected. This stuff about pit bulls turning on you and being vicious killers is getting rediculous. The american pitbull terrier is an EXCELLENT family dog.

Besides this breed that i highly recommend i would say a mutt from the shelter.

  17. Wow. Another puppy-wanter who believes that ALL pit bulls turn on their owners. How close-minded of you! Please re-evaluate your WANT for a puppy - because I hate close-minded dog owners. Because chances of Mr/Mrs Fluffy that you buy now, will have a higher chance of turning on you than any well-bred pit bull with considerate owners.

  18. To answer your question most mixed breeds are good. We have a black lab and 5 kids :)  We also have a golden retriever who is now 13  , and he has been great with the kids. Stay away from  Dalmatians, pits and they say Shepard's ( although we had them before ) We also had a great dane who died at age 13. She was great with the kids just a big moose!  Go to the pound and ask them for advice. You don't actually need to get a puppy to get a good dog. We got Toby the lab and he was at Deaths door from the pound her had heart worms, mange and cocidia. but I knew how to deal with them and was ok with doing so. he is a great dog. I wouldn't get one from a pet shop because  they have alot of health issues from in breeding. my mom got one and well.. he was dumb  and mean. enough said. if you have children bring them along to the pound and see how to dog reacts to them also. We brought our 15 year old Autistic son and Toby sat in his lap, A match made in heaven !

    Best of luck to you

  19. dachshund, beagle, or a german shepherd. i've owned all of the breeds very affectionate dogs and the german shepherd is very protective of us but is friendly when she knows she can trust the person. all are good with other dogs

  20. First of all, the reputation of the pit bull has been badly damaged. They are actually the breed with the best average temperament.

Before choosing a dog just because they are cute or the temperament, figure out if this is the right time to obtain a dog.

A good way to pick out a breed of dog is to go to www.dogbreedinfo.com It has a breed picker that asks the important questions, and points out a breed that fits your life-style.

After selecting the dog you want and that fits you, you should do some research on the breed you are prepared for what the breed is like and any special things the breed needs.

Once you've prepared yourself for a dog, I would recommend obtaining your dog from an animal rescue. There are plenty of purebred dogs that have been abandoned, and they usually already have vaccines and fixed. Breeders are a second, but never buy from a pet store, they usually keep their animals in poor shape. A good place to look for shelter dogs, and things you look for in your dog is www.petfinder.com.

    Good luck. :)

  21. The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, Labby or Lab for short), is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. The Labrador is considered the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is by a large margin the most popular breed by registration in the United States (since 1991)[1] the United Kingdom,[2] Poland, and several other countries.[3] It is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in the United States, Australia, and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities.[4] They are exceptionally affable, gentle, intelligent, energetic and good natured,[3][4][5] making them both excellent companions and working dogs. Although somewhat boisterous if untrained, Labrador Retrievers respond well to praise and positive attention, and are considerably "food and fun" oriented. These dogs are as well loyal and great with little children. They may be used in shows. With training, the Lab is one of the most dependable, obedient and multi-talented breeds in the world.[3][4][6]

  22. every responder thinks that their dog is perfect; so do I.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known as swiss nannys. wonderful with kids.

    My suggestion:

Get a breed book and go through it with your kids,  Do some internet research.

    Answer the basic questions:

    * how much exercise does the dog need-? -can you give it that much?

    * space- do you have a backyard? or are you near a park?

    * what is your experience with dogs? There are many breeds a first timer should avoid.

    * perhaps you should visit a local shelter with the kids. See what dog they fall in love with

    best of luck

  23. Big or small?

I love English Springer Spaniels! They are really nice family dogs. They are loyal and adoring. Absolutely beautiful too! They listen well. Actually, I guess that depends on how you train it.

We had one for 13 years. His name was Kokomo. He was really a very nice dog.

Some other good breeds are Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, Shelties, Australian Shepards, etc.

Also look on http://www.petfinder.com for some puppies in need!

    Hope I helped

  24. First off puppy's take alot of time..and people soon realize that they do not have that. Make sure you can spend quality time with your pup.  A puppy loves to snip, and bite on things, make sure your kids know that ahead of time.  Also a great family dog would be a mix from your local shelter, or rescue.  They would love to have a family to love and give kisses to.  I hope you think of that.....and if there is a breed you are thinking about...I am sure they will have that kind of mix in there...you can look on petfinder.com    They have great choices there

<---------- that is my new family member I adopted him off petfinder.com   and he is so loving and giving...I am so happy to call him mine.

Mine are Corgi's and they are great family dogs.....they do like to chase and might nip at your childrens heels...but can be taught not to..they do shed..and shed they do...but who cares if you want to love them and make them your family.

      Also a lab/mix is a great dog

So many out there....just look them up and go to a shelter and you will be so suprised at what kind of dog you will get.

Good luck in the times ahead looking for your newest member of your family.

  25. beagles are great family dogs

    read about them at http://animal.discovery.com/breedselecto...

  26. a good family dog?

uhmmm... well if you dont mind having a larger animal i'd say a golden retriever. honestly, they are the most friendly dogs and they are good for a family.

most smaller dogs are either too energetic and hyper or not a great family dog.

  27. A good family dog would be a nice one,

like a beagle or a terrior mix or something,a collie, golden retriever which ar really cute! dogs like that.

Dog's that you dont want are dalmations because they can get pretty nasty, also if you want a big dog you can get a german shepard,

anyways another dog you DONT want is a yappy dog like a chiuchua [ i didnt spell right] or a poodle they are very nasty dogs

    anyways i hope this helped!
