We are not looking for next Murali, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779 – Cricket News Update
Sri Lanka can never think of getting another great spinner like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/M-Muralitharan-c1864 who was one of his kind in the world of cricket, claims the legendary Lankan batsman and former skipper, Kumar Sangakkara.
Sangakkara opines that a Murali-like spinner is not likely to take birth again in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, so the Islanders must give up waiting for this miracle and learn to live without him. He advised the national cricket authorities to work on producing some quality
and match-winning spinners instead of dreaming about Muralitharan.
The gifted batter strongly believes that great cricketers are not born overnight, rather it takes years of diligence and struggle.
Talking to the media today, the Matale-born player, who has 103 Test, 306 ODI and 33 T20I games to his name, said, “You get one Murali and that’s about it really. Again it’s important for us to come to terms with that. We’re not looking for the next Murali,
we’re looking for the next best spinner to come and win games for us.”
He elaborated, “He might not take 800 wickets, but I think the guys we have on tour are good enough to do that job for us. Murali was probably one of the slowest bowlers to 200 Test wickets, they’re not born overnight. It comes from years and years of hard
work.”
The significance of Murali is evident from the bitter fact that Sri Lanka have not won a single Test match since his retirement, that came on July 22, 2010. The offspinner played his last match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at Galle, wrapping up his two-decade-old career
with an 8-wicket haul and a tremendous victory for his side.
The Kandy-born legend’s world record of 800 Test wickets is not likely to be even touched by any bowler for years to come. The 39-year-old also had 534 ODI scalps to his credit. The superstar played 133 Tests, 350 ODIs and 12 T20Is during his international
career.
Murali announced his retirement from one-day format after playing the India-Sri Lanka final match of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011.
Desperately starving for a Test win, the Lankan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in the mid of this month. They will be looking for the first ever post-Murali success over there.
