We are not playing solely for Ponting: Ed Cowan – Cricket News Update
As the Tasmanian Tigers gear up for their Sheffield Shield final against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan insists that the team is not focusing on playing for Ponting.
After Ponting was abruptly axed from the Australian ODI squad, following a string of disappointing batting performances, he expressed the intent to continue his Test career, for which he hoped to remain in shape by playing domestic cricket. He rejoined the
Tasmanian team in time for the Ryobi Cup final against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bailey-c1480 (101), and Mark Cosgrove (69).
With the upcoming Sheffield Shield final against the Bulls scheduled for March 16 at Brisbane, Ponting may get a chance to win his first ever Shield final. However, the Tigers insist that the match is not all about Ponting.
“We are certainly not playing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 - this won't be it.”
However, he went on say that Ponting had been a valuable addition to the squad.
“But to have him in the group is exceptional. Any game I get to play with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 I will value hugely, such is his presence,” he added.
In their last Shield match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865 at Hobart on March 8, Cowan and Ponting joined forces for a stellar 205-runs partnership, propelling their team to an 8-wicket win.
Ponting admitted that he was relishing his stint with the Tigers at a time when they were close to attaining the top spot on the points table.
“There's never a great time to be dropped from the Australian cricket team but I have been able to play a one-day final and the last couple of Shield games when we are up near the top of the table,” Ponting said.
He went on to add that the only downside to playing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 had been the fact that he had missed out on spending more time with the Tasmanian team, for which he debuted as a 17-year old in 1992. He claimed that he was enjoying his time in the domestic
circuit, and was pleased to see the way things had changed during the 20 years he had been away.
