Also, if we are going from Paris, Nice, Avignon and back to Paris, should we take the TGV or the Eurail Trains?

  1. Eurail is just a pass to travel on trains in Europe, it is not a particular type of train, so in France you will be traveling on the TGV. Eurail passes are expensive and only worth it if you plan on traveling a lot. Trains in France are cheap enough so I would not advise to get a Eurail pass. You must book early (90 to 30 days ahead) and online to get the best deals and go through the French portal intead of the English version (get help from someone fluent in French if you are not). For instance a Paris-Nice ticket in March is 25 €. Expect to pay a little more in the summer but it will still be reasonable if you follow the advice I just gave: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/l...

As for places to stay in Avignon, the cheapest option is to rent a house or apartment if you are staying at least a week:

    http://www.abritel.fr/uk/index.php

    http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/vaucluse/avi...

    http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/... (select "rural gîtes")

If you are staying only a few days, go to the Avignon tourist office website and they will list hotels and other forms of accomodation. Bed & Breakfasts are also a possibility.

    http://www.ot-avignon.fr/

The websites listed above also list B&Bs.

August is the most expensive month in France but you can sometimes get discounts the very last week of August. In the accomodation websites' search engine, you will be asked to choose a region and département. Avignon is in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and in the Vaucluse (84) département.
