The Sunderland boss claims that his side have been looking to sign a number of players, but no deal has been finalized uptil now.
Until last December, the Black cats were struggling perilously in the Premier League and relegation to the Championship had become a nightmare which looked likely to materialize.
However on came Martin O’Neill, who turned around the fortunes of the club and had them playing beautiful football with brilliant results in no time. In the end, instead of the drop, the Lads enjoyed a mid-table finish and the chance to strengthen their
squad for another season in England’s top flight.
O’Neill is regarded as one of the finest managers in the country owing to his success with Aston Villa and now that he has pre-season to mull over, the team should be back to their very best in the 2012/13 campaign.
Though the squad at the Stadium of Light is reasonably talented, the tactician is keen to add new faces and has been scouring the transfer market in search of the right talents, keeping his budget in mind of course.
Wolves’ Steven Fletcher is thought to be a major target, but the club’s asking price of £15 million has threatened to curtail the transfer.
“We have made some bids for players; we are in negotiations with clubs at the moment. We seemed to have stalled on all fronts at this present moment. My general view point is that I hope we could improve the team. We have to give ourselves a chance next
season. We do know that we are doing our best,” said the coach.
“From the club's viewpoint, if we can't get the players in that we would like to get in then I think you have to look elsewhere. The squad needs strengthening and I will be doing my utmost in the next fortnight and the fortnight after that to do so.”
Possessing the likes of Stephan Sessègnon, Ahmed Elmohamady and Connor Wickham, the Tyneside outfit are likely to improve on their table ranking from last season and further additions may take them to the brink of European qualification given Martin O’Neill’s
impressive record.
