I am confued on how a stopover works. We are flying united and if I read it right we can get one free stopover and then pay for one. Has anyone done this and how does it work?

  1. You have to contact the Airline some allow stopovers, some charge you and some don't allow.  You need to tell them so you can be booked on a later flight and if you already have your ticket they may charge you for making a change to your itinerary.

  2. Agree with Nam Erewhon, you normally need to book a stopover when you originally purchase your ticket. Depending on the fare you paid and the restrictions based on that fare, you most likely will have to pay a fee to change a non-stop flight to a stopover flight. Read the fare rules for the ticket you purchased if you have them available, or probably the easiest thing to do is to call United.

  3. Most likely the answer is yes - but contact your airline to verify.

Personally - I don't think it is worth it to stay in Japan for a couple of days - just head straight to Thailand
