We live in Delaware and my husband is trying to get on at the Anchorage police department but we started at looking up costs to move and it's close to 8K. Who can afford that? Does anyone have ways to get up there that is inexpensive they can suggest?

  1. Sell everything that can be easily replaced. We do have stores up here! Way to lower the shipping is to contact a moving van company. If you are not in a hurry...they will pick up your stuff and store it until they have room in a van that is going up here. Then, they will load it up and let you know when it is on the way and when it is due to arrive. I did this and it was so very much cheaper than the ordinary way. You could also pack your vehicle with the important stuff and drive up here. It will be an excellent adventure!

  2. First try to sell (via papers, etc) you big items

    Next, have a garage sale

Next, rent a trailer for a one-way move (this could be pricey as it is only one way)

pack any remaining items you have in the trailer and drive

be prepared for a long bumpy road along the Alaskan Highway.

see if there is a moving allowance with the new job!

  3. The cost is going to be dependent on how much stuff you have and how much of the work you are willing to do, including driving.  Check out this website which will allow you to have an Anchorage company provide a quote.

If you are willing, you can drive to Seattle, WA with your stuff and then put everything on either a barge (cheaper) or drive onto the ferry and steam up.  No way getting around it though, you have some high cost ahead of you for that long a trek.

  4. Get rid of everything but the irreplacable items before you move. It can cost more to move stuff then it is worth...seriously, it can.
