Take lots of pictures!

Meet friends, and be sure to get their addresses (snail mail, not email - email addresses change too often). It's great fun to keep up with folks you meet 5, 10, 20 years later.

Be safe!

Do NOT exchange currency ANYWHERE or with ANYONE outside of official government exchanges. This is a common thing and can get you in a heap of trouble FAST.

Keep in touch with the US embassy/consulate. Let them know where you're going and when.

Dress warm! It's cold. It's (*^#$@! cold.

Get off the beaten path. Try to see the country as the natives see it, not just from the tourist's perspective.
