We arestaying in a rented house ..their sofa is quite lumpy ..can i cover the seating area with a thin rug?

A nice throw arranged neatly looks great.  I've even seen this done at eco retreats!  You can buy couch covers that are fitted over in the same way, but they can be expensive.  Just find something large enough that looks good and fit it snugly into the contours of the couch, add a few contrasting cushions and you will have a great designer look.  I've actually used a nice white bedsheet before.  The only drawback is that you have to straighten the cover regularly, but hey, rooms need to be tidied anyway ;)

Sure, Why not...A thin rug wont harm anything.

You add some batting to the pillows,you can go to a fabric store and purchase batting by the yard if you like .If the pillows or seat cushions have a zipper open it ,and remove the stuffing , wrap the new batting around and replace the zippered cover to them . A rug will not look nice ,you could get a quilt instead .
