We arrived at the US in November 2006. We did not file taxes for the year 2006. Were we supposed to?

  1. Visit the IRS web site at www.irs.gov.  In the forms section look at publication 17.  You want to look at filing requirements.  It is likely that with only November and December income you did not have a filing requirement.

    If by chance your citizenship is US then you are required to report your world wide income and this could put you into having to file.

    Also on the IRS web site you can downloat Form 1040 for 2006 if you have a filing requirment.


  2. You may not have been required to (see the tax rules for that year to see) --- and, if you were, you can still file now.  If you actually owed taxes, the IRS will ding you with a bit of financial nastiness for late payment -- and that will be the end of the matter.
