http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vicente-c36001. Porto suffered a major setback as the Roosters caused one of the biggest upsets of the season by winning 3-1.
Benfica on the other hand, overcame Feirense after a spirited comeback and secured their position on top of the league.
For most part of the campaign, Porto haven’t looked like their usual selves. The reigning champions had a torrid time in the UEFA Champions League and were eliminated at the first hurdle.
In domestic matters, they haven’t fared any better and crashed out of the Portuguese Cup after losing 3-0 to Academica. The battle for the Liga Sagres crown has well and truly turned into a two-horse race, with both the Dragons and the Reds in the mix.
However given their recent performances and the depth of their squad, Benfica are arguably the favourites and have assembled a five-point lead at the top.
Although the Lisbon giants are far ahead of their rivals, FC Porto’s Hulk claims that his side can still lift the trophy in May despite the obvious gap in points.
Speaking to reporters, the striker said that there were still some tough games left in the league and that the Eagles could very well drop points due to the quality of the opposition they will face.
"There are 13 matches left; we have hard games coming, just like they do. Porto and Benfica are not the only good teams. There are also Sporting Braga, Sporting CP, Maritimo and Vitoria de Guimaraes. Those are all strong sides.”
He also revealed that although the defeat against the Gilists came as a surprise, credit must be given to the home side who were organized and prevented Porto from establishing their dominance.
"No-one expected the defeat to Gil Vicente. Our team is very strong, but it is very hard to play against a well organized team away from home,” the Brazilian International was quoted as saying.
With only a few games left, the league is Benfica’s to lose and they will have to be careful not to drop points, as FC Porto will be right on their trail.
