We could have won the game, says Benfica forward Nicolas Gaitan – Primeira Liga News
Benfica forward Nicolas Gaitan claims that his side did not deserve to draw their UEFA Champions League game against Manchester United and should have earned three points at home.
The Portuguese outfit hosted their English counterparts at Estadio da Luz last night in their opening UEFA Champions League fixture.
Jorge Jesus’s men had put together a good string of results, but were thought to be out of depth against the mighty Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s team had blown apart all their opposition in previous fixtures, including an 8-2 romping of Arsenal at Old Trafford before the International break. Boasting the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 in their ranks, few though that Benfica could score,
let alone gain a result.
However, the match proved to be quite different than expected, as the Eagles controlled the tempo of the game and were unlucky to be held to a 1-1 draw.
Gaitan, in particular, was in superb form and turned the United defence inside out with his array of sublime skills and slick passing. The attacker was the one who provided that much needed spark of quality in the game and allowed his side to take the lead
with a scrumptious cross into the legs of Oscar Cardozo, who scored the opener.
While they shared the spoils with the Red Devils, Gaitan believes that he and his teammates played far better than the opposition and were quite unlucky to not win the crucial tie.
"Manchester played well, what gives us moral and leave very happy. The side that played? It is indifferent to me, last year I played on both sides, is not new to me.”
Although he lamented the missed chances by his team, the 23-year-old also said they could not do anything about it now and have to focus on their upcoming games in the Primeira Liga.
“From what we could have won on the field, but we played against a great rival of the same for equal, and add points, which is always important. Actually we could have scored but that's football,”
Lastly, responding to the praise lavished on him by United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, Gaitan said that while he was unaware of anything said by the trainer, he would be very pleased with everything positive from the long-serving Scotsman.
"I honestly told me if I know nothing, nothing came to me. I did not know but it is always important words coming from a coach of this magnitude,” the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Boca-Juniors-c38658 man was quoted as saying.
After an impressive display against United, Gaitan will be looking to add to his glowing reputation, when his side face Academica on the weekend.
