“We don't want a controversy” – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 on Malinga’s 5-ball over – Cricket News Update
Downplaying Lasith Malinga’s 5-ball over, which might have made a major difference in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 this Tuesday at the Adelaide Oval, Captain MS Dhoni insisted that his team did not wish to become embroiled in a controversy by lodging
an official complaint.
“It's done and dusted," he said, insisting that he had no idea why the error had not been spotted. "That's what is important. We can create a big fuss out of it but what's the point? (...) We don't really want to create a controversy."
He went on to discuss how the bowlers and even batsmen tend to lose count of the balls sometimes, in which case the third Umpire always interferes, but for some unknown reason, it did not happen in this particular match. The right-hander was unwilling to
play blame games, and simply said that he hoped the mistake would not be repeated with his team, or any other.
India’s former spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Maninder-Singh-Bola-c74166, also expressed surprise at the undetected error.
"I am surprised that no one noticed it. The leg umpire is counting the balls and TV umpire has a scorer alongside him and these days with so much competition even the batsmen are counting the balls," he observed.
The oversight occurred in the 30th over of the Indian innings, with Dhoni and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-Douglas-Fry-c90332.
That one delivery could have played a crucial role after both teams were locked at 236. However, the Indian skipper downplayed its significance to the eventual outcome of the game.
"I don't know [if a full over might have broken the tie] because you could have had a dot ball. It happens in cricket, so maybe it would have been a dot," mused Dhoni, during the after-match press conference.
Maninder Singh was also unwilling to cut the Indian batmen some slack due to the slip-up.
"There were 20 overs to be bowled after the incident and a lot of time for India to win the match," he said.
The Men in Blue are clearly unwilling to wallow in regrets, and ready to move on. They will be locking horns with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 at Brisbane on February 19.
