I dont know...Call me sensitive but I felt bad when some sports officials and commentators said that the Philippines are beaten by countries like Ethiopia in sports for not getting a gold medal in the Olympics. Knowing that Ethiopia's condition is far more worse than the Filipinos but they got an olympic gold medal. They started discussing the condition that they have and I felt humiliated. I felt like that is of different topics but they were making a connection to prove that we are far more better than them.

Some common discrimination (racial and ethnic) are...

...discriminating people from different provinces. Ilokanos, the 'BAYS',

...the BUMBAYS

...the Neg-r-o-e-s

...the Hampas-Lupas

How do you feel about this?

  1. Discrimination of any kind cuts both ways.

People's feelings get hurt.  Some feel bad about themselves after wards and it isolates both sides.

The bigot in question has to live with the effects of their own self hatred and that of everyone else.

I used to be a bigot.  I asked Jesus to help me get over it as it kept me unhappy and caused bad situations in my family.

When He lifted it off me I felt 100 pounds lighter and have made many new friends I never thought I would have.

Isn't it amazing what a prayer can do?

When it all seems hopeless it will pull you through.

  2. Well what's the difference Filipinos discriminate themselves also. I meet Filipinos here in the states all the time saying their from Manila(most of them actually everyone I have met states they are from Manila). Which is B/S by the way. When I mention to them why are some Filipinos like this? They all say because they are from the province and are stupid. These are actual Filipinos not half not even Filipino-American, just off the boat or plane. See Filipinos discriminate themselves.

  3. We should not discriminate.

Yes, I have heard Filipinos talk condescendingly about Bumbays (local term for Indian nationals). One time, I heard a snooty Filipino talk about the Chinese (derisively called Chekwa) labeling them as "parang tao na rin" (they are almost like humans). I squirmed at that unbelievable and totally undeserved racial slur!

  4. I don't know since I don't discriminate.  I was raised to see people from all walks in life as equal; to see a person with disabilities as someone who is to be pitied not mocked at or ridiculed.

I don't discriminate against the "promdis"; what I don't like are some Tagalogs looking down on "Bisaya" thinking they are more superior than them. Hmp!

  5. Sometimes people become the product of their own environment for example, the home and community they were raised in.

Without proper guidance, we can all be ignorant and discriminate due to a lack of understanding.

A discriminating person is a reflection of their background.

  6. i remember a joke from "dating daan" by Brod Pete before:

he said we're not supposed to call people from india as "bombays or bumbays". because they might also call us according to our places like "oi,si Kalentong o!" if that person happens to be from Kalentong,Mandaluyong..

we don't really mean anything by that.it has been circulating for ages due to ignorance on the Indians but what is really mean is calling them 5-6 right? on my part,it's high time that we try to educate ourselves and the others on the negative impact of discriminating people.

  7. I just found out we didn't come home empty-handed from Beijing.  We got some hardware in all colors in the demonstration sport called "wushu".  Way to go, Pinoys!!!

As for the discriminatory practices among us Filipinos, I honestly  believe we don't mean anything bad by those terms, e.g., "promdis", "bumbays", etc.  Derogatory though they may be now, it wasn't meant to be so.  Empty labels, that's what they are.  Still and all, we should be more careful how we refer to other groups and more so, what we say about them.  It doesn't hurt to be politically correct.

  8. Let's put it this way:

No FIlipino should ever whine and complain about being discriminated against unless he learns to stop doing it himself...sometimes to his own race.

Why do we whine and complain about racism so much...because I guess it takes one to know one.

  9. ignorance is the leverage for discrimination. when i started working in the BPO industry, cultural integration has been included in our training. it is sad to note that Filipinos (well, most or some of us) try to discriminate others because we want to feel good about ourselves. we think we can always do better but we can't because we have a lot of excuses. we discriminate others because we think we are superior than the probinsyanos, indians, etc.

worse, we don't do anything towards this behavior. we are sensitive when other races discriminate us but we lack sensitivity when we try to discriminate others.

this is the only country where the natives feel like second-class citizens.

  10. Re Filipinos being beaten by Ethiopians by garnering a gold medal in the Olympics, I don't know if that is racial discrimination.  I tend to believe that is is more of a statement of someone's knowledge on the living conditions and state of economy in Ethiopia compared to the Philippines, not that philippines is far better in that aspect.

.......who is discriminating against the Ilokanos? Who??? That sounds ridiculous because me as an Ilokano feels a bit above some other ethnic groups -------that means then that we mutually discriminate against each other, lol!  I guess the word is regionalism.  It sucks, of course.

...... yes, it is a bad thing.  We should not harbor such feelings but I guess it is in the psyche of peoples all over the world.  Look at the whites.  Even a lot of  Malaysians discriminate against us, so i heard.  Too bad, really.
