  1. All your answerers are on the right lines!

First change the faulty ball valve (easier to change than repair). If problem persists fit a shock arrester on the cold main. This is like a mini expansion vessel about the same size as a tennis ball.

Just fitted one in my home. The washing machine fill valve was making a terrible clunk every time it switched off and the shock arrester has eliminated the problem completely.

    Good luck.

  2. If this sound is made when the water cuts off it is because there are no air cushions in the plumbing, these are designed to reduce or totally eliminate this sound.

This would be a piece of pipe with a cap that extends 6 to 8 inches above where the line comes out of the wall

  3. this is what is known as a water hammer. We have one that sounds like a siren. I cant fix it and I used to be a plumber.

  4. it is plain and simple that it is a faulty ball valve in your toilet causing you this problem and it will need to be repaired or better still replaced.

what fireman is talking about is whats called an expansion vessel (these are used to take up expansion of hot water on sealed systems and in rare circumstances one would be put on the cold main to take up expansion from a combi boiler)

the noise you are experincing is caused by your ballvalve washer closing too quickly and a flow restrictor or pressure reducing valve would need to be fitted to cure it, but as above, it would be better just to replace your ballvalve (normally about £35 of a job for a qualified plumber including the part)

  5. it sounds like an air lock in the cold water feed ..

  6. Fireman 4's answer may be the only way. But before to start altering your pipework try a change of valve in the cistern. You can get a Torbeck valve for about £7 from Screwfix. These have pressure reducers included. You have to be gentle fitting them as it's easy to strip the thread. You will need a new fibre washer.

  7. oh yeah that will be the little plumber you left in the last job just let him out lol tc

  8. sounds like you could use a water hammer arrester.
