The Russian national team managed to retain the top-spot on their respective group table after recording a 1-0 win in the third qualifying match of the World Cup against Portugal at Luzhniki stadium on Friday.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Capello’s army won the enthralling encounter after recording back-to-back wins in the opening two qualifying matches of the tournament against Northern Ireland and Israel respectively.
And while the Euro 2008 semi-finalists managed to score seven goals so far in the tournament, they are yet to concede a goal.
Zenit St. Petersburg and the Russian national team striker, Aleksandr Kerzhakov, has insisted that the defensive display of his team led them to their latest win in the ongoing competition against a stern opposition.
The fact that Russia recorded their first ever win in the qualifying stages of the tournament against the Navigators makes the 29-year-old proud of his team, who believes that hard work never goes in vain.
“I think the most important thing in this match is discipline and team spirit. We played great defensively and denied the Portuguese who wanted to take more possession. Our team played very well in defence and we restrained our
opponents to create chances, except the standard provisions. Our defenders and goalkeeper were terrific.” The former Dynamo Moscow player was quoted as saying.
Kerzhakov, who scored the only goal of the match, revealed that it was difficult to retain the lead for more than the remaining quarter of the match as Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani posed a major threat to their defence.
“We knew it would not be easy but we followed a game plan and acted accordingly to what the manager had said prior to the match. We tried to stop Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo from taking more possession and giving them more room
to attack.” He said.
