but i want to improve my running and catching of the ball

  1. ...oh yeah, i always feel nervous before every game but after 5 mins, i have enough adrenaline in me, and i feel amazing, by the second half, i feel like the game should never stop [i know very silly]

As far as both of those go, doesn't your team have practices to improve both of those?  If you mean to focus beyond that, high intensity interval training would be the way to go.  One of the things I've found to work well is fartlek training (yes it's legit, look it up)  Basically you pick a set distance to run and set up interval along the course where you run full speed, then slow back to a jog, then speed up to a certain percentage you can judge in your mind, and alternate between sprint and jog.  Depending on how fit you are currently, I'd cut your training distance in half if you are doing fartlek's because they take a lot out of you if you push yourself and do them right.  One of the fitness routines the Eagles follow is to stationary bike for 45 minutes on the hill setting and the highest intensity the bike allows, and try to keep it above 90-100 RPM for the whole workout, which is again very tough if you're untrained so work up to that.  As far as catching the best way is to practice jogging and passing with teammates, and doing various passing drills.  It will come, I played American football as an O lineman, so I never touched the ball, but the more you play with a rugby ball and have it in your hands, the more acclimated you get to holding on to it.  So it wouldn't be abad idea to buy a ball if you don't have one already worldrugbyshop.com usually has some deals for fairly cheap $20-40.  As far as nervousness goes, I have a routine before every game that I go through while kitting up and getting a pre team stretch, and some pre team ball handling I listen to music.  "These Filthy Hands" by Mushroomhead jacks me up so much before a game that I don't even think about being nervous.  Best of luck and keep playing

  4. You will improve with every game if you have a good coach, this is very important. It's never nice to lose but if it doesn't happen too often it will actually help to improve your game more as you generally learn your mistakes as a team then.

    One sport that is often over looked in the Northern Hemisphere (and I am not trying to start a debate on which Hemisphere is better here, just giving an example) is touch rugby. This is one sport that will hugely improve both your running fitness and ball skills, any Southern Hemisphere player knows this as they start playing touch rugby very young and continue to play it throughout their rugby playing years and beyond too. Trevor Liota (among other pro's) still play now!

    I suggest you definitely find a touch rugby competition nearest you (try www.touchrugby.com), in my opinion the sooner this sport is embraced by rugby players as not just a sissy sport the better. It's one of the main reasons players from different hemispheres play different styles historically.

  5. the only thing i could say about running and catching is with the running do alot of distance sprints and with catching the only thing you can do is pratice with a team mate for a while. the only time i feel nervous is when i have a big match to play and it all goes away at the kickoff!!

  6. well those things can be done during trainings don't u think? but if u still think u need extra practice, tell ur coach and he'll help u with it. alternatively, u can do it on ur own. for running u can just run on ur own anytime. and for catching, get out into an open space with a ball. kick an up an under as hard as u can so that it goes as high as possible and try catching it. u'll really improve after some time. and yea duh i feel nervous before a game but the best way to calm it is to listen to some music before the game and try to not even think about the game until u step onto the pitch. the nervousness will be gone by then
