We had the best XI on the field today, insists Gambhir after five-wicket defeat to Chennai – Cricket News Update
Rubbishing the perception that the Knight Riders would have fared well against Chennai Super Kings on Monday, had they played an extra spinner, the KKR skipper insisted that they had fielded the best XI.
“I believe that we had the best XI on the field today,” said Gambhir while speaking to the media reporters after his side faced a last-ball defeat at the hands of defending champions Chennai Super Kings at home.
Crediting the Chennai openers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/M-Vijay-c1867, for providing the side with a solid start to their 159-run chase, Gambhir said that he was happy with his side’s bowling.
“I am pretty happy with our bowling performance,” the KKR skipper said after the match.
“It was tough for them when Mike Hussey and Murali Vijay were batting so well. They were even hitting good balls for boundaries. I will give a lot of credit to the bowlers who got us back in the game even after the CSK got off to a flying
start,” he added further.
Chasing a mediocre total of 158 for six set by the hosts, Hussey and Vijay provided the Super Kings with an impressive launch pad of 97 runs from 10.1 overs. It seemed to be a one sided affair as long as the duo was firing at the crease.
However, KKR’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Philip-Narine-c91869, removed the two in the 11th over in the space of three balls to take the Knight Riders back into the game.
Wickets of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Faf-du-Plessis-c1427 further swung the momentum of the game in the home side’s way. Du Plessis departure on the first ball of the 18th over left the tourists requiring 32 runs off 17 balls. The Super Kings
became favourites once again after skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajat-Bhatia-c83456 for six on the last ball of the chase to
hand Chennai a five-wicket win.
Asked if KKR were 15-20 runs short of a competitive total, Gambhir said, “The wicket was a bit slow and the ball was gripping onto the pitch. So, it becomes difficult for the new batsmen to play their shots from the outset.”
