  1. 1) why can't you downgrade?

    2) why pay 6K?  YOu can get a scooter for about 1/4 of that much.

  2. $6,000 will purchase 1,500 gallons of $4 gasoline. It isn't miles per gallon that matters so much as miles per dollar that count, and the scooter will still use some gas, so figure that in.

It could save you some money, but how much depends entirely on how much you actually use the scooter and leave the SUVs in the garage or driveway. I don't know where you live, but scooters (and motorcycles) are impractical in my state because of the long and bitterly cold winters.

My wife commutes 42 miles each way. We're thinking about  getting another used Buick Le Sabre for her this fall  (28-30 mpg) — hopefully gas prices will stay up so those used car prices will fall (it's not miles per gallon, but dollars per mile that count)

On rainy days, will you still drive the scooter to work? Every time you don't, just remember that $6K and how much SUV gas it could have bought.

Or buy a used scooter (or Honda Ruckus) for much less money. I'll ask my wife tonight if she really needs heated leather seats on her new scooter!

Also, remember, the real cost of those SUVs may be in depreciation, not gasoline. So buy a used clunker (old Toyota) for a couple of thousand, save gas, save money and keep those same great SUVs for many, many more years. You'll be dollars ahead and you'll have those nice big vehicles for when you really want to enjoy them.

Any car is more versatile than any motorcycle. Trunk space, back seats, a roof and windows ...

  3. if you are considering a scooter, why cant you downgrade??

You can get a good NEW scooter for 3-4K

  4. A good used Harley Davidson can get over 45MPG and it will be faster than the scooter and suitable for runs on the highway. The scooter will of course get more milage but the HD gets close to hybrid milage with more versatility.
