We have 2 boxers,an older female 2years and a younger male 12 months old who is fixed. A friend has to give up his boxer we are trying to take him but the two males do no seem to get along. We've tried a play date but it did not go so well, anyone have any ideas for us to try. We do not want to see the other dog goto the pound. We had them on leashes (males) and all they wanted to do is fight. The female seemed to fight the male at first but then seemed to get along fine. anybody know any ways to try to get the males to be buddies?

  1. To be honest, it sounds like this may be a case where you just can't get them to be friends.  I can see you working a month with them, leaving one day, and coming home to a bloody mess where all of them are cut open because of a huge fight.  Bad for the dogs.   Bad for your wallet.

I know you want to save the boxer, but I don't think it is going to work.  (Even shelters won't let you adopt a dog if the dog doesn't like your dog at the initial contact.)  He's just going to have to find another home.  Don't feel bad.  The dog is your friend's responsibility.  If he is purebred, he'll probably find a good home anyway.  Have him post on petfinder.com and craigslist.org and make sure he inspects the home thoroughly.  (The dog should be neutered though so he doesn't end up being adopted just to breed.)

  2. well if you get them nuetered they should be fine, otherwise introduce them slowly

  3. introduce them slowly, and take them off leashes but be ready to grab them, my 3 1/2 y/o male is aggressive to other dogs on a chain/leash but not when he is off it

  4. Is the other male neutered? Is the female spayed? You need to take just the males to a neutral location. Keep them on leashes. One person per dog and walk next to each other on a walk. Head on confrontations can make a situation worse. After the males are getting along take your male home and do the same thing with the female. After they get along have somebody bring the male and walk all there. This not a day project. It will take several days. If you take the other male get him neutered asap.

  5. Boxers, unfortunantly, tend to be same-s*x aggressive.  Having both males neutered helps..  but you may not ever get them to be buddies.  You may have to commit to the "crate and rotate" lifestyle if you want both dogs.

As another option, "crate and rotate" for temporary, foster this dog, and help find a permanant home instead of sending him off to the shelter.

  6. put a muzzle on both dogs, hold one and have the othe check the other one out and then switch turns

  7. Don't take your friend's male dog.  It could be trouble.  Have your friend contact Boxer Rescue.  It can be found at akc.org or just do a web search on "boxer rescue" and I'm sure many will come up.  Boxer rescue will keep the dog in a foster home environment where someone will take care of him just like their own pet until a new, carefully screened owner can be found.  If no owner can be found, the dog will stay in the foster home permanently.  This is far better than selling the dog to a stranger, giving it away or putting it in the shelter.  I strongly recommend pet rescues.
