We have a 17foot caravan, what is the best car to tow this with?

caravan weighs approx 1000kg, we currently tow with a Mitsubishi Pajero, which is brilliant, but are looking to change to something more economical.

i reckon you would have to still have to have a diesel as they have way more pulling power at low revs so it would be easier on car at low revs you never said what year of a pajero it was the newer engines aer way more economical i have a toyota avensis 01 model 2 liter diesel which pulls my boat fantastic and is very economical

There are not many reasonable sized cars that won't pull your 'van. VW Golf diesel, any Mondeo, Suzuki Vitara, etc. The best bet is to contact Towsafe or the Caravan Club who will check for you. Good luck and have fun. Remember your speed limits. 60mph on motorways, 50mph on dual carriageways with a central barrier and 40mph on ALL other roads unless posted as lower.

As you currently tow you will be aware that the towed unit should not be more than 80% of the weight of the towing vehicle so your towing vehicle needs to be at least 1250kgs in weight - preferably more as most people load their vans up.

In other words you are looking either at a Big car or another 4x4.  As Mr Brown seems to have it in for 4x4's it may be sensible to go for a big diesel engined car.

You do not say whether you will be looking for new or s/h in your replacement vehicle. My neighbour loaned us his 17 footer and his tow car last month. He has a BMW525D  and it was an effortless exercise and the car always seemed fully in control and working well within its capacity.  I had previously towed his van with my Pugeot 406hdi (110hp)  estate  and whilst it did the job it was working hard in hilly country.

Economical.... nothing you'd want to tow the caravan with.

any type of truck would pull it like an f 150 would be good or chevy silverado 4 x4 would pull fine great pull be a turbo diesel but gas prices are not to friends on diesel right now
