We called a service man (with a $64 service charge) who told us it had a freon leak and would cost more to repair than purchase a new one. He didn't even open the circuit board to look at it. I asked if it could be the defrost cycle and he said that since there is no frost in the freezer it is a freon leak.

The freezer is at 55 deg and frig at 60. Of course the food comes out today and we have tentatively ordered a new one.

What would you do?

  1. That sure is quick for a refrigerator to give out, but I agree with your service man.  The things he would have checked include the compressor and fan.  If the defrost timer has the freezer defrosting all the time it could do this, but I would hope he checked this.

  2. The serviceman was right, since there is no frost on the evaporator, so it must be undercharge of refrigerant or loose compression of the compressor. Dont worry why he didn't open the circuit board because as you had said the compressor and fan motor are both running.
