  1. Try the nearby city of Mainz. Easily accessible by commuter train. Old Roman settlement, famous cathedral, university town.

  2. the bahnhoff...train station...there is alittle greek man that sells gyros that are incredible

  3. Sachsenhausen. you can take the metro there its almost like every house has a bar.... also if you get to the bahnhoff take a walk to the center of the "Zeil" its a shopping street/ passage... about 1/4 mile down are historic buildings to include a church more than 1500 years old. Careful around the subtrainstation. there are alot of paddlers and druggies. However... The Zeil is great! Great german Boutiques and all....

Btw i grew up there! Email me for more questions

  4. i also think mainz is good.  easy to get to, low key, medival & also the famous Chagall Blue stained glass windows are in the little church up on the hill.  you can have a drink next to the river at the hilton or hyatt (i forget which it is) hotel restaurant.

  5. I'm guessing the layover is at the Frankfurt Airport?

First thing...get your boarding card for you connecting flight!!

If you have a US Passport or have a Visa for the Shengen Countries, I would go to the city of Frankfurt.

From the airport it is only about a 15minute ride to the center of the city and the trains run every 20 minutes back and forth.

Take the local S-Bahn directly from the airport. Double check the platforms since they are doing construction now.

I would suggest getting off at  Konstablerwache and walk along the Zeil (Pedestrian shopping street) towards the Hauptwache.  Along the way there are lots of side streets with cafes and bars. Also the famous Roemer Platz with all the old half timbered buildings is not far from there....and there are wonderful museums and of course, the Main river with great restaurant cafes for hanging out and enjoying a beer and Bratwurst.

But if you like you should try the specialty of Applewine and Frankfurter Gruene Sosse (wonderful herbed yogurt sauce served with potatoes and hard boiled eggs) just to enjoy the culture of the area a bit.

Once you make it to the Hauptwache, walk along a little beyond and you will find the "Fressgasse" which is a pedestian street filled with restaurants that will lead you to the Alter Oper or Old Opera House. Very beautiful old building indeed.

To go back to the airport, head back to the Hauptwache and look for the S-Bahns going to the airport. They will have the word "airport" written in English (German word for airport is Flughafen just in case) and that will zip you back. Just remember that you need to check in at least 1 hour ahead of time. Frankfurt is a huge airport with at least 2 security points plus passport controls depending on your destination.

Please think about those liquid rules. Europe is strict with it!!

Have a wonderful time in Frankfurt!

  6. If you can finagle transportation to the zoo, it is worth the trip.  I was there as a teenager, and it is the first place I saw live full-grown giraffes.

Also Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral, or more commonly know as simply the Cathedral, and the Alte Opera Concert House are worth a look-see.
