We have a cat that at times will pee outside his box. He has been fixed as well as our other cats and he gets along great with them. He has no illnesses and is not in any pain...he is a picture of great health. But every so often he will pee outside his box...we keep the box clean everyday. So what's his problem?

  1. try getting another litter boxi and keep it clean, ive had this problem too and it worked

  2. In a multi cat household, whether it is two cats or ten, the rule of thumb is, one litterbox for each cat, and one more just because.

Are you SURE your cat does not have a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)? You should take the cat to the vet to make sure.

Also, watch to see if the other cat is preventing this cat from using the litterbox. If you only have one box for the two of them, it may be that the box is occupied when this cat has to go, and goes somewhere else.

You need to make sure you clean the spots where this cat is urinating with an enzymatic cleaner made specifically for animal urine. Cats can smell something like one ppm of urine. And if they can smell it, they will continue to go in that spot.

  3. A cat will go to the bathroom outside there box for a number of reasons. The box may not be clean enough to there satisfaction..or maybe it is just developing a bad habit. If it continues to pee, ( in the same spot ) There may be a smell in that area that attracts it to it..

  4. They say you should have one box per cat, plus one.  It helps avoid any territorial stuff with the boxes.

I have a problem with one cat too.  She's the low one on the totem pole and the vet says it could be stress from that.  She actually suggested anti-depressants (sigh).

She also said to buy some Cat Attract to put in the litter.  It is supposed to make them want to pee in it.

Did you get him checked for a UTI?

  5. It's normal for a neutered male to "mark".  You clean it everyday, he claims it everyday.

  6. I have the same problem... I have 3. My siamese boy and little girl kitty have no problems w/ the litterbox, but my black boy is SO finicky, even if it's brand spanking new litter, he won't touch it. He actually perches himself on the edge of the litter box and poops and pees from up high! lol and he won't scratch in the litter, he scratches on the floor next to the box! He misses a lot of the time.  I used Feline Pine for a while and he actually used the box normally, but my girl wouldn't have anything to do with it and started peeing behind the couch! Grr! So I had to switch back to regular litter. Try the feline pine stuff

  7. Maybe the times when he does pee outside the box the kitty litter isn't as clean as he would like it to be. Some cats are real fussy. I have a cat and when she was a kitten she used the kitty litter for one pee, would not go in it again because it wasn't clean and she would pee or poo next to it. Drove me insane. All my cats go outside now and do their business in my garden
