Question:

We have a eucalyptus tree?

It's very tall, my husband thinks we should be pruning it, and stuff, but should we be getting tree surgeons in, and what would they do. It's no danger to anything close by according to the survey on the house when we bought it 2 years ago

  1. they grow massive .

    keep them well cut back.

If its really tall you may need a professional

  2. There was a eucalyptus tree in my garden when I moved into my house. It was perfectly healthy and remained so. It was a little over 6ft when I moved in. it grew and grew and grew. Until it was over twice the height of the house, I would estimate about 80ft. Minus poor memory and the human tendency to overestimate then I would put it at 60ft. and growing. Far too tall to be managed by myself. Quoted for removal about £600. I had some cowboys offer to do it for £300. When I turned them down they offered to do it for £250. So you can see if you don’t manage it now and find you need to at some future time, it is going to be expensive. I investigated the possibility of having it loped but was told it would destroy the shape of the tree and would never look right again. In the end I did a deal with a neighbour who complained to the council and as it was a healthy tree I refused to have it removed on the grounds it didn't pose any danger. Because there had been a complaint the council offered to do it for free. They didn’t have to so don’t rely on a similar solution for yourselves.

  3. Don't prune a tree unless you KNOW what your'e doing.

Make sure you get a certified arborist to evaluate it.

  4. Get a professional to examine it. A word of warning, as it is only 2 years since it was planted I would assume that it's still a comparatively young tree. As such I must tell you, from my own experience, that they are very brittle in their early years and can snap easily in a strong wind.

  5. Just make sure there are no Koala Bears in it first. Then get a tree surgeon to have a look. As long as you keep an eye out for those cute little koalas that's the main thing
