Our male daschund for 5 yrs. and he never got all the way trained. We no longer have him. I have cleaned the carpet again and again with enzyme cleaners. I wonder if our new female 12 week old puppy can still smell the urine. Should I replace the carpet? Would that help her?

My husband doesn't want to replace the carpet until she is completely trained, but I am worried the carpet is preventing her from being completely trained? I have heard they have an extremely strong sense of smell. What should I do?

  1. First thing you need to do is to keep in mind that your dog is only three months old.  My dog wasn't fully trained without accidents until 6 or 7 months and it wasn't until after a year that he could hold it for a long period time.  The rule of thumb is this... your dog can hold its business one hour for every month old it is.  So your dog is three months old and she can only hold it for about three hours.  You need to make sure you're letting her out very frequently and when you can't keep an eye on her you need to put her in a crate but for no longer than three hours.  I wouldn't suggest changing the carpet until she's finished her potty training.  There's no sense in wasting more money than you need to.

You just need to continue to keep an eye on her and recognize the signs of a dog that needs to go the bathroom.

  2. yeah, these dogs are hard to potty train. i would wait until she fully grasps the concept of going outside before replacing the carpet. im sorry i dont have any more advice, mine just stopped doing it one day and hasnt had any accidents since (on the new carpet). just be sure to put her outside whenever she looks like she needs to go, or every hour or so.

  3. Weenie dogs are hard to train and you may never get them fully trained.  I have had two.  My current one does well.  The only time she leaves a puddle or a present is during rainy days and really cold months.  We got a new pup recently.  During rainy days, she would use the puppy pads we put out.  We have a dog door with a fenced in yard.

  4. My dog had the same problem and I just couldn't get her potty trained, then we got her a kennel and every night I would put her in it and lock it and after about 1 week she stopped going in the house, but you also have to let them out often and the best times is when you wake up and before bed.

    Best of luck

  5. I once had a problem like that when one of my dogs was a puppy. You can get a dog book about it that has advice in it but it doesn't always work. What you can try is every time she starts looking like she's gonna pee, you run her outside to a certain place. It has to be the same place every time.To try and prevent the puppy from peeing on the carpet from the smells, you can get certain sprays that get rid of the odor and prevent stain. It works fairly well. You can find them at a lot of pet shops. Hope my advice helps!
