  1. If he's fixed he should adjust to either fairly well. If not then I would go with a (fixed unless you want a lot of kittens) female.

I would suggest a female kitten.  I have a 7 year old male cat and got a female kitten about 2 months ago.  The 7 year old is an alpha male and is VERY territorial.  It took about 2-3 weeks but now they are great friends.  The vet was very happy I chose a female and said that it is better with older male cats to get a female kitten.  So there is my 2 cents

  3. Fixed cats have no  gender to speak of so either will work.

  4. I would say do not get a kitten because the older male cat is Alfa so you do not want a dead baby kitten in a week or so.
