She is only 6-10 pds. The vet recommended a pill but it has to be taken a day or two in advance. I often travel for work and want her to go with me in car and was hoping someone could share what worked for them.

  1. i would give my dog a benadril pill it worked for about 30 min-1 hr...1 gram per pound

  2. My boyfriends dog is like that.  She gets carsick within the first 20 seconds of the car moving and throws up non-stop.  We haven't taken her anywhere recently, but I have been looking into home remedies to help

Ginger is one.  Give your dog ginger (cookie, capsule of ginger powder, ginger ale, any form) about 30 minutes before going in the car

Keeping the dog on the floor of the car

    Honey

Keep the dog occupied (bone, toy, etc)

    Keep all windows down

  3. If you when you are going in the car do not feed her 2 hrs. before that time. With hold water for 1 hr. before traveling.  Also do not let her "look" out of the windows from her carrier.  She is in a carrier right? Make sure the air temp inside the car when traveling is cool but not cold.  I hate to medicate for this as there are several things you can do before the last resort.

First and foremost try several very short trips in the car so she gets used to short trips and then extend the times.  Do not hit the brakes suddenly or take curves excessively as this is the usual causes for car sickness.

Try putting a small clear glass of water on the dashboard and drive without her in the car for several blocks and see how good a driver you are with "live animals on board"  If the glass tips at all you need to drive easier when she is on board.  The key here is BALANCE.

I have driven horses, cattle and dogs around all of my life and you would be surprised what a little extra carefulness when driving will make for your little puppy.

  4. i have tried several things to help my dogs with sickness and it didnt work.  some might not agree with it but i used the antisickness tablets you buy from the chemist for us humans and give my dog the child dosage and it worked no problem.

  5. My dog used to be that way.  Basically you need to help 'retrain' your dog out of that.  The best thing to do is get a few treats, go into the car, and just sit there for like 2-3 mins with your dog, windows down, engine on, etc. - but don't drive.  Pet and give the dog alot of treats and praise.  Then get out of the car after 2-3 mins.  Do that again either 6-7 hours from then, or the next day.  Keep doing that every day and increase the time.  Start going for just a trip or two around the block then come right back.  I had to do that with my dog, and now he can travel with us with no problem.  Also, we used to do the crate, and that was actually worse in the car.  We bought one of those harnesses that attaches to the seat belt, so he can sit in the front seat (just pull it all the way back in case the air bag ever deployed).  He gets tiny broken pieces of treats every 5-10 mins or so - that seems to help his tummy.  Also, put the air conditioner on a little and definitely crack the passenger window open (even in the winter - sorry, they need that fresh air).  Put a nice comfy blankie underneath and she should be fine.

  6. do you let her walk around the car? if so maybe you should put her in a carrying case.

  7. I had a puppy that got carsick whenever we took him in the car, but we just kept taking him on short trips (5 min.) and then after a while he was fine.
