we do alot of out of state work. We do provide transportation to the job and back, if we have to fire a subcontractor do we have to pay for his way home?

Did you have a contract with him?  If it states that you pay travel both ways, then yes, I do believe that you would need to follow your obligations as spelled out in the contract.  Otherwise, I do not believe you would need to.  Since he is not a full-time employee, the possibility of any sort of litigation is dramatically reduced- unless you violate the terms of a contract.
