we do not have an ice maker, but we use a large bag from the grocery store we just get ice out of, and we have some ice trays. now everytime we go to make a cocktail, the cup smells funny. its not the liquor, and its not the cup, so we are guessing its the ice. does ice get old, go bad or what!

  1. the smell from the bag enters the water in the ice. Try ice trays. They can be bad for health too, dioxin.

  3. Ice itself is just frozen water.  Store bought ice, when new, should have no smell.

However, just about everything in your freezer is made of water.  The water from one thing will slowly evaporate in the fridge, and re-freeze somewhere else.  This is how you get freezer "burn."  This is why you need to de-frost your freezer from time to time, and, this is why your ice begins to get smelly.

I would wager you have some nasty stuff somewhere in your fridge.  Fish, poultry, leftovers...

Try sealing that stuff up better.  use cling wrap along with foil.  Use ziplock bags instead of foil or cling wrap.  Use tupper wear instead of ziplock, and use double or triple sealing if you're going to leave it in there for a long time.

You can also check to make sure nothing has gone bad, and you can use things to eat up the odor.  Charcoal briquettes are good for about a month.  Baking soda also works for a while.
