hi, im a 14 year old girl and today in our house there was a bat flying around and instead of my parents and my older brothers being calm about it they started screaming and freaking out and running into different rooms and shutting their doors and telling me to get rid of it. I grabbed a towel and my cat and I chased it around till it landed where I could grab it. It was crawling up a screne so I grabbed it with the towel. of course when I grabbed it it started to shriek and I noticed that it had fangs so I looked at it a bit and it was brown and fuzzy and kinda big....what kind of bat is this? oh and there's also another one flying around somewhere. (the bat flew away outside un-harmed. I live in wisconsin if that helps to tell what kind of bat it is)

  1. vampire bat?

  2. Bats are mammals and they have canine teeth (fangs) just like most mammals, Even humans, ours are just not usualy so pronounced.  They kind of look like little dogs, sometimes. I am not sure what kind you have in wisconsin, tho...

Sometimes they get inside our houses, and its really kind of funny how people react to them. A healthy bat (they do get rabies, sometimes, just like many animals, but usualy not. Chipmunks and squirrels have it more often, I think, and Plague, too) will not harm anyone, they are excelent flyers, and contrary to popular belief have great eyesight. But centuries of legend have made people afraid of them. When you are able to catch them, it is because they are exhausted and afraid, from trying to stay away from those chasing them around. Be carefull with them, their tiny bones are fragile. they are our friends, because they eat many times their weight in insects during their lifetimes.

  3. It was not a Vampire Bat...those are only found in South America.  ALL bats have canine teeth (fangs) just like humans.  You were correct to only handle it with a towel and never bare hands.  IF bitten, the bat would have to be killed (to test for rabies) and you would end up getting lots of vaccinations.  Do always use caution when handling as not to get bitten.  I am glad you released it unharmed..as bats are a very important part of the ecosystem as pest control.  Take a look at this website for bat ID to see if you can figure out what type of a bat you captured..some do look very similar.  This site also has tips on how to extract bats from your house safely. 8. A simple way, is if you have a zoo in the area. Call them up, and ask if they answer animal questions not related to the zoo. If they're nice, they'll patch you through to someone who can answer your question.

I think most bats have fangs, so calling it a vampire bat isn't the right thing to do, because chances are your family will panic. I found a great link for you. Check it out, and you'll get your answer.
