  1. Try to find some Hispanic people to practice with! That is the best way to learn. It's especially helpful if you can listen to two people converse with each other in their native language. Then you can pick up the words you know as they speak.  Also, it's good if these people are good friends, then you won't be offended when they critique your pronunciation or correct your vocabulary!

Get some children's books in Spanish for your daughter. Barnes & Noble and Borders have them. Buy some magazines that are easy to read in Spanish, such as People En Espanol. You needn't be fluent to travel to another country, but of course, the more you know the better.

  2. This will depend on your capacity to learn languages.  Some adults learn them easily, some adults may take an eternity.

Should you stay in the US until you do?  NO!  Go and have fun! Travel and learn more Spanish!

  3. Fluently, you never really become totally fluent until you go live somewhere you can speak the language all day everyday.

But to an advanced level I would say anywhere from 5 to 10 years for yourselves and 3 to 8 years for your 6yr old. Kids learn languages way faster than adults. But it ALL depends on how much time and effort you put in to learn in the first place.
