We have found 3 holes of yellow jackets in our yard all in one day is this not unusual ? why so many ?

They love sugar, meat, light and heat.  Do you have pear trees in your yard?  Pears mature very fast and are usually sweet.  Birds peck at maturing fruit  and leave holes.  Do you have a lot of bar-b-q's and leave waste meat exposed?

I find wasps like to build their "homes" facing East, for fast morning warmth.  If they do get into your house, don't panic.  They usually fly to a bright window, use a can of hair spray on it and not a killer spray, which is harmful to humans.  Follow the instructions or just shake it up fast.  The hair spray is usually cold to slow them down, the wax will coat their wings & make them heavy.  Once they drop to the floor, just vacuum them.

I discourage scooping them up & bringing outside, because if perchance they are stepped on, they will release an "odour" & start other wasps on a "swarming frenzy" on an unsuspecting unlucky person.

If they fly towards a strong light bulb, just switch it off & open the curtains.  If you spray at a hot light bulb, it will shatter & shower dangerous sharp glass shards onto everybody & everything, very difficult to remove.

Check all the ceilings in you house.  Close up all holes, no matter how tiny.  Otherwise the wasps will lay eggs (in the attic) that get heat from your rising hot air to keep them alive through the winter.

Some years we have more than others, so I would say it's not all that unusual. It just happens sometimes. You must have something in your yard that they are attracted to this year.

Sounds like you have their type of food in your yard.  

And plenty of water.

no, it is not unusual. if you want to get rid of them, call a professional to do it for you. they have stuff that really works. what you may buy at the store wont work. i have used it many times and it is just a waste of money.
