.. in the meanime what do we do with him? Our garden isn't safe (cats and escape routes!). Where should we keep him indoors? In a box/nest type thing? We've fed him carrots and lettuce/apple/cucumber..

  1. it would be very hard to get him back to where exactly he was in the first place... i dont know much about tortoises all i know is that tortoises sometimes hibernate and look dead but actually are not. its a terrible death being buried alive.

  2. depends how big he is. We kept ours in an upsidedown bread crate but he was only tiny! Could try a rabbits pen or guinea pigs pen? Food- try lettece, mushy peas, dandelions and leaves, buttercups, tomatoes, cucumber, some like a bit of cat food but mainly vegetarian. Don't forget a bowl of water- not deep enough for it to drown in though! Good luck with finding an owner. Try asking about it in a pets shop if you need any more info about it.

  3. just fill and cardboard boz up with straw/hay or grass

and just leave him in your lounge and he will be fine to just relax and sit there...

    No-one disturb him though

  4. have you taken him to a vet to get it checked to see if it is micro chipped, most vets will do this for free if he is then you can find out who he belongs to, he needs a bigger space than a box you need to make a pen that is four times the length of the tortoise, and if it is cold (not the warmest in Kent), you need to get him some heat as with out UV lighting and good temps the tortoise will stop eating, feed him lettuce (not ice berg) dandelions, clovers  cucumber and grated carrot for now  but this is not a sustainable diet, in the long run, get in contact with the tortoise trust , they have a lost and found section, http://www.tortoisetrust.org/activities/... they might be able to help, you can also read up on how to care for a tortoise if you can't find the owners, best of luck honey hope it all works out. don't let him go as tortoises are not native to Britain and most will not survive the winter without the proper care, this is a pet that someone has lost.

  5. what kind of tortoise is it?

  6. id wana keep him lol keep him in a box with holes but occasionally let him outside while somebody is supervising   is it heavy?

  7. Where do you live? Someone near me has lost a tortoise. I'd keep him in a large box if you can, feeding him lettuce etc.

  8. Leave him be he doesn't eat anything that grows in your garden but bugs. I have them pass through my place from time to time. I just wish them well and let them go their won way unless they get in the way of the lawn mower or the roto tiller in which case I stop and gently set them aside. I live on 15 mostly wooded acres so you can imagine what passes through.

  9. Take the tortoise outside and turn him lose. The tortoise was doing fine until you came along. How would you like for some hairy looking ape to lock you up and take away your freedom that you had enjoyed all your life. Don't cast your own insecurities and lack of survival skills onto animals. They know how to survive if you will leave them alone.

  10. Do you live near a wood or pond? He may live in the wild. In the meantime, keep him safe from the cats, give him some leaves or straw (or shredded paper) to burrow under, and feed him some ground meat or mealworms for a little more protein in his diet -- and don't forget a water dish.

  11. Like as in NON native tortoise that likely escaped someones home?

Try this site  http://www.tortoisetrust.org/care/care.h...  they have lots of pictures so you can ID him  and then find a care sheet with what he will need.
