  1. If you have a GFCI outlet on the same circuit as other outlets, and the GFCI outlet trips, that will cut power to all other outlets down-line from that outlet -without tripping the breaker.

  2. I had that once--lost power to the garage & basement. breaker looked fine but I flipped it off then on again & it worked. was odd

  3. The first questions I would ask you:

Do you smell anything burning in the home?

If you do then you might have a faulty wire that could cause a fire and should make sure that the breakers are off and that you call an electrician ASAP.

Has there been any water leaking in the home recently?

If the answer is yes, then you might have a short somewhere in the home that can be very dangerous and you should cut off your breaker and call an Electrician ASAP.

Is this just one room in your home?

If yes, then it is probably a faulty breaker - Try to turn it off and then back on and see if that helps. You may have to pull the breaker all the way off before you can reset it. Sometimes when breakers get old they do a partial trip and have to be tripped the rest of the way before you can reset them. If your breaker is old and is doing this then you can reset it, but eventually it will have to be replaced by an electrician.

Is it a whole section of the house? If yes, is this section an addition to the home?

Sometimes when an addition is added to the home it will have a whole new breaker box installed for it and you might be looking in the wrong box. If this is an addition and it does not have another box and it is the entire edition then you might want to call the electric company.

Has someone been diggin near your yard?

This could be a sign of someone breaking an electric line open causing loss of power. This can be extremely dangerous as power from the pole is usually at least 240 volts not to mention the amps it pushes. In this even call the electric company.

Is the power only out on some outlets?

Sometimes this can be caused by a loose wire on an electrical outlet that is in series with the rest of the room. Once you break the current at one bad outlet everything else goes out. Even a ceiling fan can go out in this instance if someone wired it on the same circuit.

No matter what the situation it is imperative that you get the problem solved ASAP - electricity is very dangerous and can not only cause shock, but can cause fires, and structural damages as well.

    Hope this helps!

  4. Might be the main breaker.  Have seen that before.  Only real way to tell it to test it.  If you are not sure how to do that call someone who does.  A volt meter is all you need.  Just check for power on either side of the main breaker.  The top it from the city. If it is not there its not your problem.  Then check the bottom.  If its not there you just got your answer.  Again, If you don't know, ask someone who does.  It will bite if you do it wrong!

  5. neighbors all have power?

  6. Someone had this problem this weekend. The problem is most likely a break in the power line supplying your house. Especially if it is a buried line, some of the current is draining off the line. Call your power company to fix the problem. They are responsible for the repair.

  7. do you have mice or squirrels?   years ago I had a squirrel chew on my wires..... killed the squirrel when it bit into the wire but also killed my power!
