  1. It's kind of an oxymoron to ask if capitalism from pharmaceutical companies is getting in the way of healthcare.  The people who care about medicine and do the research don't have any money to fund their research.  The pharma companies only do it to make money.  So technically many of the drugs we have only exist because people will pay money for them and pharma can profit off them.  The places where capitalism get in the way are minor compared to the obstacles it's able to overcome with additional funding from profit vs government grants.

    What I always wonder about is how the industry tends to consolidate the smaller development guys into the larger.  Like someone invents something and a bigger company buys them to meet the revenue pipeline requirements for shareholders instead of making new stuff themselves.

    When Obama wins the election and Hillary is helping lead the charge for Universal Healthcare prepare to hear from 3 of the wealthiest lobbies in the nation:

    Doctors, Insurance Companies, and Pharmaceuticals.

    Most healthcare execs will tell you the same.
